There is little information available on the discovery of this hydroxycinnamic acid but people have been aware of it from around 400 B.C. when it was used as a sleep aid.


Caffeic acid has a number of protective roles in the human body. It is potent anti-inflammatory (a substance that minimises unnecessary inflammation in your body’s cells) and antioxidant (a substance that protects the body’s cells from the dangerous free radicals that are released into your cells during oxygen related reactions). Caffeic acid is not believed to be essential in humans so no official recommended daily allowance (RDA) has been set. However, some sources suggest that consuming between 100 milligrams (mg) and 500mg of this hydroxycinnamic acid is enough to activate its health benefits.


Coffee is the main source of caffeic acid with a 100 milliltire (ml) serving supplying you with between 18mg and 88mg of this hydroxycinnamic acid. Apples, artichokes, basil, cabbage, oregano, pears, radishes and turnips are also good sources of this phytonutrient.


Caffeic acid is believed to be safe and there are no adverse effects associated with consuming high levels of this hydroxycinnamic acid. However, drinking too much coffee (1 of the main sources of this phytonutrient) can cause a caffeine overdose. Drinking between 3 cups and 7 cups of coffee can cause mild caffeine overdose which leads to increased urination, increased thirst, muscle twitching, rapid heartbeats and sleeping difficulties. Drinking 8 or more cups of coffee can lead to a serious caffeine overdose which results in confusion, convulsions, disorientation and loss of conciousness.


Coffee is not normally top of the list when you think of health foods. However, by treating yourself to 1 or 2 cups of this hot beverage each day you can supply your body with a good helping of caffeic acid and activate its many health benefits.
