That being said, there is bad advice going around at the moment that I strongly recommend you beware of…

This morning I came across an e-mail from my colleague and mentor, Mike Geary of the (Truth About Abs Belly Fat Loss Program). This article talks about this bad advice that I strongly recommend you steer clear of:

From Mike Geary:

As you might have seen, there’s a new documentary this week on HBO that features the obesity crisis, and there’s some controversy as to the take home message of this show.

One of the nutritionists out there that I highly respect his opinion has a few things to say about this documentary and this is worth paying attention to… I’ll let him take it from here…

“The Weight of the Nation” Documentary Sends the Wrong Message
by Dr. Jonny Bowden, Nutritionist, author of Unleash Your Thin

This week, a new documentary about the obesity crisis premieres on HBO. It’s called “Weight of the Nation”. And it’s take-home message is wrong, wrong, wrong.

You’ll be hearing a lot about this documentary, if you haven’t already. And with good reason. It’s the result of an unprecedented collaboration between the three major public-health institutions in America:

1. the nonprofit Institute of Medicine (IOM)
2. the CDC (Centers of Disease Control and Prevention)
3. the NIH (National Institutes of Health)

“Weight of the Nation” is a sincere attempt to confront an epidemic (obesity) that costs the US alone 147 billion (in 2008, up from 78.5 billion in 1998).

“Obesity, and with it, diabetes are the only major health problems that are getting worse in this country, and they’re getting worse rapidly”, said CDC Director Thomas Frieden, MD, MPH, in a July 27 media briefing during the Weight of the Nation Conference. “Beyond the economic costs are the disability, the suffering and the early deaths caused by obesity”, he added.

Yet the documentary—made by sincere and well-meaning people, mind you- draws the wrong conclusion and sends the wrong message. And it’s unlikely to make the slightest bit of difference in the obesity crisis because its focus is on the wrong enemy.

Here’s why. For decades we’ve been being told that the reason we’re so fat is that we eat too much and we exercise too little. This diagnosis is so widely accepted that to question it makes you a heretic. We’ve variously blamed high-fat foods, saturated fat, too much protein and sedentary lifestyles for this situation, but what we haven’t blamed is the real cause of the problem:

Carbohydrate intolerance and a toxic diet.

The conventional wisdom is that we were never fatter, but the truth is we were fat during the depression, when bread lines and soup kitchens dotted the nation. As Gary Taubes asks in his superb Newsweek cover article The New Obesity Campaigns Have it All Wrong, “How can we blame the obesity epidemic on gluttony and sloth if we easily find epidemics of obesity throughout the past century in populations that barely had food to survive and had to work hard to earn it?”

When you get real close to it, even the common idea that we’re fat because we don’t exercise doesn’t pass the smell test. “Why is the world full of obese individuals who exercise regularly?” asks Taubes. Indeed. The Weight of the Nation shows construction workers in Arkansas laboring at back-breaking jobs that involve running up ladders with the equivalent of a 50 pound backpack, and lifting very heavy stuff all day long. If it were all about exercise, guys like this should be svelte.

They’re not.

And if it were all about eating too many calories, how do you explain the fact that some medications have as a “side effect” weight gain of anywhere from 20-140 pounds? Did the folks who gained that weight on the meds all of a sudden start eating twice as much?

No.

The fact is that weight gain is driven by hormones, and the most important hormone for weight gain—insulin- is driven by the engine of carbohydrates. It’s not that we’re eating too many calories (though that may be a part of the problem). And it’s not that we’re not exercising— (that is a huge problem, but not just from the point of view of weight).

The problem is that we’re eating too many carbohydrates. And the ones we’re eating are all the wrong ones.

We’ve been blaming fat (especially saturated fat) for years. Our health “authorities” have been promoting for decades what one writer called “the greatest nutritional experiment in history”—a high carbohydrate low fat diet. This grain- and carb-heavy diet—very similar to what’s used to fatten cattle—was best illustrated by the god-awful, thankfully discredited USDA food pyramid of 1992. (Your tax dollars subsidize the production of the very foods that are making us fat and sick, in the form of a corporate giveaway known as the Farm Bill.)

And of course, all these wonderful foods, made from corn, sugar and wheat, are virtually “fat-free”, so surely they’re healthy, right?

But fat was never the enemy, though acting as if it were made a lot of companies a lot of money.

The real enemy was- and is—sugar.

In the 1980’s, the FDA decided- in its infinite wisdom—that sugar was perfectly OK since the evidence against it “wasn’t conclusive”. (If you think this decision wasn’t influenced by the sugar lobby, I’d like to talk to you about a lovely bridge I have for sale in beautiful Brooklyn.)

“While the government spent hundreds of millions trying to prove that salt and saturated fat are bad for our health, it spent virtually nothing on sugar”, writes Taubes. “Had it targeted sugar then…our entire food culture….might have changed”.

And maybe we might have been told that the real culprits in our diet are not meat* and saturated fat, but the overwhelming amount of sugar and processed carbs that we consume on a daily basis, and that are increasingly being linked to diabetes, cancer, Alzheimer’s and virtually every other disease of aging.**(Note that when I say “meat” isn’t to blame, I’m talking about pasture-raised meat, not the crap we get in supermarkets and restaurants.)

Meanwhile, we have a lot of very overweight people who not only suffer with their weight, but have the added indignity of being blamed for not having any “willpower”.

“Lack of will isn’t their problem”, says Taubes. “It’s the absence of advice that might actually work.”

——

Thanks Jonny for that great insight! Dr Jonny shows you here what foods can make you lean permanently, and backs his claims with science.

Bad habits are one of the things that got you in the position where you had to lose weight in the first place. However, and unfortunately, many people end up with or continue with a set of specific bad habits during their diet that keeps them from getting little to no results. I should know… I used to do these things myself!

See if you are doing one of these bad habits below that may be slowing down (or stopping) your weight loss progress… and what I highly recommend you do instead…

1. Adding unhealthy additives to your foods and drinks – Condiments are a dieter’s (and non-dieter’s for that matter) nightmare. Ketchup, mayo, sugar, cream, are all things that are LOADED with EMPTY calories and tons of bad stuff (simple carbs, sodium, etc.).

In a given day, you could literally consume 500 or more calories of just condiments! Now just imagine what all that is doing to your body negatively. Now imagine how many calories you’ll save and how quicker you’ll lose weight (and improve your overall health) if you eliminate or switch out those condiments to healthier versions?

2. Weighing yourself too much – Results is the secret to getting a TON of motivation to stick with anything in life. If you see or feel results with your body, you can certainly count on yourself staying motivated. However, if you weigh yourself too much… and you don’t see the type of results you want on the scale… you will more than likely lose motivation… and may ultimately give up.

What I recommend you do is to first off only weigh yourself once a week (and preferably first thing in the morning before you have eaten anything). Secondly, the best way to measure your progress is by seeing how your clothes fit, and seeing how you look in the mirror. The reason why is because your weight may not always tell you that you are progressing. And that’s because muscle weighs more than fat, and you may have put on muscle and burned off fat. And there certainly isn’t anything wrong with that!

3. Skipping breakfast – By ignoring the most important meal of the day, you are putting yourself in a position where you will crave carbs like crazy later in the day, you’ll slow your metabolism down (which leads to fat storage instead of fat loss), you’ll lose natural energy, and more. The solution is simple: Eat a healthy breakfast every morning!

4. Eating a mega dinner – Due to skipping breakfast and eating like a bird throughout the day, most people end up starving by the time dinner rolls around. Therefore, they end up eating a HUGE dinner! This ends up causing issues with your digestive system, it will slow your metabolism down, and it can cause you to get sugar cravings late at night… plus more!

What I recommend you do instead to firstly ensure you follow tip #3 above in regards to never skipping breakfast. Secondly, I recommend that you go on some type of diet program that is based around eating smaller meals more often throughout the day (which could even be something as simple as a nutritious protein shake for a meal or two). The amount of meals you should be eating should be around 4-6. This will boost your metabolism, keep you feeling full, and will do wonders for your digestive system.

One Last Tip…

How you go about dieting and exercising not only has to be natural and effective, it also has to keep you motivated. The more motivated you are, the more you will automatically stop bad habits and get on the right track to getting an amazing body both inside and out.

So, if you want to stay motivated with getting in shape, and if you want POWERFUL strategies on how to effectively lose up to 6 pounds a week… naturally, then I suggest you take 30 seconds out of your day and head on over to claim FREE instant access to my digital report: The 18 Steps I Took To Drop 6 Pounds A Week at: www.FastWeightLoss101.info

This tip will help you actually DESIRE to stay consistent with improving your body… instead of dreading it! You see, getting in better shape will always start with your MIND. It doesn’t matter what diet you go on, or which exercise program you do. If your mind isn’t right… then your waistline ain’t getting tight! How you think, how you respond, and what you desire most will depict whether or not you’ll be successful with your program.

What is the first thought that comes to you mind when it comes to healthy eating and doing some type of physical fitness? Is it negative? If it is, then this article is just for you! Today I’m going to talk about a simple trick to overcome a crucial mistake you should NEVER do with dieting and exercising.

Therefore, as you can see, focusing heavily on getting your mind right is most certainly the most important step in the beginning.

But how do you do this? Should you just tell yourself “enough is enough… I’m going to get in shape no matter what”… and then you just go jump right in with both feet with a diet and exercise program? Do you just mentally block those annoying craving urges that pop up? Do you just force yourself to put in the exercise DVD, or put your exercise gear on and head to the gym, etc.? Do you just deprive and deny yourself of foods and drinks you can’t seem to let go of?

Or…

Do you play it smart and allow your mind to catch up to what your body desires most?

I don’t know about you, but that second option sure does sound a whole lot better!

The bottom line is that the most important thing you should NEVER do if you want to stay consistent with dieting and exercising is to never FORCE yourself to start living healthier!

My friend, what I’m getting at here is that you should never force yourself to change and adapt to living healthy. What I recommend you do instead is to allow the changes to happen naturally. And by “naturally”, I’m talking about you getting to the point where you no longer desire bad things or prefer to be lazy. Instead, you end up desiring healthier foods and having a more active lifestyle. You will be more willing to stick to your diet if you NATURALLY start despising unhealthy foods and desire more healthy foods. Forcing yourself is a surefire way to end up failing.

It’s just like a personality trait. You can’t force someone to change how they are, if a change is going to happen, it’s going to happen on its own (through experiences, etc.).

Here are a few tips to help explain this a little better:

1. For dieting, yes, I do recommend you get yourself on a reputable diet program (such as one of these highly effective programs HERE). However, to ensure you stay consistent with it, I recommend that you get mind right first. So, what I suggest you do is to “break into” healthy eating gradually until you start to desire more healthy foods than you do bad foods. In other words, instead of eliminating bad foods, introduce more healthier foods into your diet. In no time you’ll start to desire the healthier foods. The reasons why is because you’ll begin to see results for one, and secondly, you will discover how better you’ll feel after eating healthy foods, and how crappy you feel after eating bad foods or drinking bad beverages.

2. Another example is with water. You don’t have to start drinking a ton of water right away. Gradually increase the amount of water you drink each day until you start to desire it more than bad drinks (soda, sugary juices, etc.).

3. For exercising, you do not have to do full insane workouts everyday if you feel like you can’t get motivated to them. Instead, you could do quick 1 to 2 minute workouts throughout the day. After some time, you will start to desire doing a full exercising routine. You could literally just stand up right now and do 10 jumping jacks and 5 body squats!

So, if you want to stay consistent with dieting and exercising, start with getting your mind on board. GRADUALLY move into healthy living and before you know it, you’ll actually despise bad foods and you’ll actually get frustrated if anything is getting in the way of you doing your exercise routine for the day!

From All Womens Talk…

This fantastic list of 42 Best Ways to Lose Stomach Fat Fast includes all the tips you need to lose that belly fat that’ve been bugging you for months or even years. According to 2011 statistics, 90% of US adult population are not happy with their abdominal muscle tone and they would gladly have a flatter stomach or lose that stomach fat altogether. Not only is belly fat unflattering, but it has been scientifically linked to many health problems such as bloating, heartburn, diabetes, heart disease, stroke etc. (and you thought having a muffin top was the worst part!). The good news is losing stomach fat and getting a flat tummy or even getting those fabulous six pack abs is not as difficult and unachievable as many people think. Continue reading…

From LifeHack…

All somewhat comical terms for belly fat. Most people don’t like having that extra flab around their midsections, but we tend to just put up with it. Most of us have tried some diet or bought a video teaching us how to do a perfect crunch. But there is too much conflicting advice out there, and besides, we’ve failed in the past so there’s no guarantee we’ll succeed anyway. Continue reading…

From Forbes (Jennifer Cohen)

It takes more than just crunches! We start to gain weight in our midsection when our cortisol levels spike. Stress is one of the primary culprits for high levels of cortisol secretion. When this happens cortisol breaks downs lean muscle (the type of tissue that burns calories most efficiently) and also holds on to fat storage in the abdominal region. That stress can even get WORSE with bad dieting; studies show that the stress caused by dieting can increase cortisol levels, making no change in belly fat even with calorie restriction. So how do you shape up? Incorporate these 6 things below and you will be on your way to a flatter belly in no time flat! Continue reading…

There are a number of things you can do while on a diet program that can cause you to not get results. However, there is one thing that many people do that ends up affecting the 2 of the most important aspects of you improving your body (your motivation level and your metabolism). To find out what this terrible thing is and what you can do to avoid it, continue reading to learn more.

You see, as I said above, there are a number of things you can do during a diet that can cause some serious setbacks on your quest to getting the body of your dreams. Some of those things are going on fad diets, taking diet pills, starving yourself, or ignoring any one of the core principles of healthy living (which are drinking more water, getting more sleep, eating ALL types of important nutrients, and exercising at least 3 days a week). With that said, those are common problems that can be fixed very quickly.

But, during a diet, many people do something else that ends up causing issues with their metabolism and ends up causing them to lose a ton of motivation to stick with their goals. My friend, this serious problem is having INSANE cheat days or cheat meals!

Now yes, it is highly recommended that you have cheat foods or cheat days during a diet program. In fact, there are diet programs based specifically around having cheat days. The reasons why is because having a SMART cheat day can actually increase your metabolic rate and it will also keep you from feeling deprived.

The problem comes in when people have outrageous cheat days where they eat extremely terrible foods and/or they eat WAY too many calories. The problem with doing this is that for one, you can end up screwing up your metabolism. You’ll also cause SERIOUS issues with your digestive system (bloating, constipation, diarrhea, and more). And last but certainly not least, you can end up losing a TON of motivation and start feeling guilty like never before!

So, what can you do to fix this? Well, what I recommend first off is that you find a diet program that is based around having STRATEGIC cheat days. Diets like this are HIGHLY effective because they do an amazing job with increasing your bodies fat burning hormones… and you’ll more than likely stick to a diet like this since you aren’t depriving yourself as much. Secondly, I recommend the obvious: TAKE IT EASY! I know you may be craving everything under the sun after dieting so clean for sometime, however, you have to take those negative consequences into consideration.

Also, another tip that I highly recommend you consider is to have “smart” cheat foods. What I mean by that is to eat foods that you shouldn’t really eat often, but they are actually still pretty good for you. For example, one of my favorite “cheat snacks” are dark chocolate covered almonds! Think about it: You have dark chocolate (which is loaded with antioxidants and can help burn fat). You have almonds (which have healthy fat plus many other benefits). Put those 2 together and you have a VERY DELICIOUS (and pretty healthy) cheat snack! You could even have alternatives of your favorite cheat foods as well.

I have been on and researched enough diet programs to fit into a dictionary! Okay, maybe not that many, but it sure has been a lot! The one recurring theme I found myself in after being on so many diets is little to no results, lots of side-effects, yo-yo weight loss, and a lighter wallet! The good news is that through all my failures, I actually found a type of diet program that is extremely effective… and even better… extremely effective for anyone in any shape. Read on to find out more…

Alright, I’m going to cut straight to the chase here. If you want to get AMAZING results without getting frustrated, failing, and losing motivation, then I highly recommend you go on a diet program that incorporates the following 4 things:

1. Eating several smaller meals during the day instead of just a few big ones. This keeps you feeling full, it raises your metabolism, it does wonders for your metabolism, and so much more.

2. Eating foods that are designed to raise your metabolic rate, burn fat, and increase your bodies fat burning hormones.

3. NEVER being overly strict on your diet where you are depriving yourself of ever eating “not so healthy” foods. The reason why is twofold. For one, depriving yourself is a surefire way to lose motivation with your diet program and you can end up giving up. And secondly, by not incorporating certain days where you eat some “not so healthy” foods, you miss the opportunity of being able to SKYROCKET your metabolism! The reason why is because if you implement “cheat foods” in a special way to your diet, this ends up causing confusion with your body and will FORCE your metabolism to increase!

Not to mention, one of the best foods to eat to burn fat is dark chocolate! Do you think you’ll be able to eat dark chocolate on a low-calorie, low-carb, or low-fat fad diet? NOPE! Eating dark chocolate that has a high concentration of cacao can do wonders for your body (I just ate a handful of DELICIOUS dark chocolate covered almonds with 68% cacao)!

4. And last but not least, I managed to get amazing success with the diet I chose because the primary emphasis of the program was to BURN OFF FAT… and not drop pounds! What do I mean by that? Well, for starter’s, you WILL be losing weight, but that should not be the primary focus of a diet program. The primary focus should be to burn off fat. If the program focuses on losing weight, it’s more than likely going to be based around doing things that can end up slowing the metabolism down (such as reducing calories too much, skipping meals, ignoring important nutrients, and more).

Bottom line, I struggled so much with being on so many ineffective diet programs. Once I made the transition and went on a NATURAL diet based on those 4 things above, I went from not getting significant results and regaining whatever weight I lost right back, to burning off pounds of fat lightning fast… and PERMANENTLY!

Are You Ready To Start Losing Weight TODAY?

Well, if you are looking for fitness motivation tips to get you up off your butt and start sweating, then this article is for you! However, I’m now going to yell, cuss, and fuss to get you pumped up. I’m going to share with you 5 pretty clever (and simple) ways you can actually “trick” yourself into exercising… even when you don’t feel like doing something as simple as walking to your kitchen (lol)! 1. Go to youtube.com and type one of the following into the search bar: For men, type in pre-workout motivation. For women, type in female fitness motivation. Pick out at least 2 videos that are as relevant as possible to those search terms I mentioned a second ago. Watch those videos and then watch how much motivation you’ll get to get up and get to work on improving your body! 2. Like to watch T.V.? Think I’m about to call you a couch potato and a lazy do-nothing? Don’t worry, I’m not going to insult you!

Tired? No motivation? Don’t feel like exercising right now? BUT… you keep looking in the mirror and don’t like what you are seeing?

What I’m talking about here is taking your leisure time and turning it into a productive time for improving your body!

During every commercial break with a TV program or every 10 minutes during a movie, stand up and do 2 body weight workouts for 5 repetitions each! For example, you could do something like 5 jumping jacks and 5 push ups. To make it more fun and interesting, switch it up each time (i.e. – burpees, mountain climbers, lunges, squats, run in place, etc.).

To put this into perspective, let’s say you watch 3 one hour T.V. shows throughout the day. During each show, there are let’s say 5 commercial breaks. That would be a total of 15 commercial breaks for 3 shows. Now let’s say you decide to do the 5 jumping jacks and 5 push ups. After watching all 3 shows, by the end of the day you would end up with 75 jumping jacks and 75 push ups!

3. For starter’s, if you don’t like going to the gym, you DO NOT HAVE TO! You can get an amazing body working out at home. You can use little equipment or no equipment at all with doing body weight exercises. Now, what I recommend you do if you do exercise at home is to make working out as easy as possible to get started with. Out of all the fitness motivation tips, this is probably the most important one. The reason why is because most of us usually don’t have the motivation to START working out. Most of us are pretty okay with continuing and finishing a workout.

Now, to make things as easy as possible, what I’m talking about doing is making sure you have space readily available for you to start exercising, making sure you have whatever it is you use during your workout setup and ready to use, etc.

4. Listen to your favorite blood pumping music! There are certain songs that generate an adrenaline rush in me that provides a ton of energy… and what better way to utilize that energy than with exercising! I strongly recommend that you create a playlist of all your favorite songs that get’s you pumped up. Play this music when you don’t feel like exercising and watch what happens! Of course you also want to play this music while you workout as well to keep you energetic and motivated during your workout.

5. Change phrases. Instead of saying “I got to workout today”, switch that around and say “I’m going to workout today”. Saying “I got to workout today” makes exercising sound like a burden and saying “I’m going to workout today” makes it sound more like it is a part of your daily routine!

So, if you want easy fitness motivation tips to get you out of that mentality of making excuses and skipping workouts, then I highly recommend you give those 5 simple techniques a try. They worked great for me and now I’m at the point where I get upset if there is even a possibility that I may end up missing a workout!

Dieting is the one thing that seems to get most people stopped in their tracks with reaching success with changing their bodies. There are many reasons for this to happen. And that’s what I wanted to talk to you about today. Today I’m going to talk about the “crimes” most people (including myself before I found out the truth) commit with dieting and nutrition. I’m also going to share with you what it is you can do to stop committing these crimes, break free out of dieting prison, and start losing weight faster, easier, and without all the headaches! 1.) One of the biggest reasons dieting seems to cause failure for so many people is due to fad dieting (such as reducing calories too much, restricting nutrients such as carbs too much, doing starvation dieting, or other types of super restrictive dieting… like eating only one type of food, etc.). You see, the thing is that the body is an amazing machine that responds best when the things you put in it are the best of the best.

Healthy whole foods, fresh and filtered water, natural supplements, etc. On the other hand, doing things that are unnatural, such as diet pills, fad dieting, lipo, etc., will have an adverse effect sooner or later. The adverse effect that fad dieting causes are a reduction in your metabolism (which forces your body to store fat), a drop in natural energy levels, digestive problems, and so much more.

2.) Another huge problem that prevents people from not losing weight successfully is due to how they eat meals. Many don’t realize this or think about it too much, but besides what you put IN your body, HOW and WHEN you put those things in your body will also have a positive or negative effect.

Skipping breakfast, eating only one or two meals a day, eating way too many calories at once, not getting smart nutrients with every meal (which would be protein, complex carbs, healthy fats, and vitamins/minerals), eating too late at night (especially with eating bad carbs), and more, are the biggest culprits of diet failure.

The best thing to do is very simple. Just do the opposite of everything I mentioned above! Eat breakfast, eat 4-6 meals a day, eat smaller meals (which is why you should eat 4-6 meals a day to avoid starving yourself), make sure you get smart nutrients with every meal, and stop eating too late at night.

Bottom line, if you stop committing those crimes above and instead take the natural route and the smart route, then you can most certainly count on some amazing changes with your body within the FIRST WEEK!

Oh, and by the way, I recommend that you get on an effective diet program that is based on the things I mentioned above.

If most people had the self-discipline of a Samurai or U.S. Marine (ooh-rah!), then most people would probably be in the best shape and health of their life. Unfortunately for most of us, getting self-discipline to start, stick to, and finish a diet and exercise program is something that is hard to come by. Sure you could just sign up for some fitness boot camp, etc., but most of us don’t have the time or money to be dedicating ourselves to something like that. So, what can you do? How can you increase self-discipline to stick with dieting and exercising?

Below I’m going to share with you my top 7 ways that I have practiced during my journey to get in better shape and health. Now, please understand that these tips are not etched in stone. These are things that I personally did that helped me overcome lazy thinking and being physically lazy. Since I think I’m a normal person (lol), I figured these tips should work for you as well…

1. Start off easy…

Yes, it is motivating and exciting when you first get started with a diet and exercise program. And because of that, most people want to get started by jumping in with both feet. This ends up causing them to start some type of super restrictive diet program and crazy intense fitness program. That in turn causes them to lose motivation within the 1st week!

What I have found is that if you start off easy, and gradually increase the intensity of fitness and gradually increase the healthiness of your diet, then you will more than likely stick to it.

2. Constantly seek motivation…

Don’t just get motivated in the beginning of your program. SEEK (which means to continually look for) motivation on a constant basis. Doing so will keep that strong motivation bug going through you pumping you up for the next workout or keeping you focused on eating the right foods.

3. If it’s not in your house… then…

You won’t be eating it! To get self-discipline to avoid eating foods that are bad for you, the number one thing you should be doing is keeping it out of your house to begin with.

4. Choose a diet that won’t conflict with your daily lifestyle…

If you have a hectic lifestyle, then going on some type of crazy diet program not only will be ineffective (and that’s because it’s a fad diet), it will also be difficult to stick to. Natural diet programs are the best diets to go on because they are the easiest to stick to and of course, they are the one’s that produce the best results.

5. Exercise early in the morning…

If your life is busy, then one of the best times for you to workout may be first thing in the morning. Now remember this: To ensure you don’t burn off muscle tissue during a workout, I recommend that you eat something high in protein and moderate with carbohydrates prior to working out in the morning. It could be something like a banana (carbs) and a protein shake (protein).

6. Educate…

To really increase your self-discipline and motivation to stick with healthy dieting and fitness, one of the best things you could ever possibly do is to educate yourself on the wonders of eating right and exercising, and the dangers of eating poorly and being a couch potato. Trust me on this, once you find out what that double cheeseburger with a strawberry milkshake is doing to your body, both of those things won’t start to look so good!

7. Only do the things that have been PROVEN to produce results…

There is nothing more damaging to your motivational levels than being pumped up on your diet and fitness program… “thinking”… that you are doing something great with your body, only to find out later that you have been doing more harm than good. This nightmare happens when people go on fad diet programs or they do ineffective fitness programs that are more focused on cardio. Fad diets slow your metabolism down and too much cardio without building muscle causes you to lose muscle tissue (which slows your metabolism as well).

If you were to never have access to a gym or gym equipment ever again, how would you stay in shape?

No, let me take it even further, if you were told that you could only do one exercise for the rest of your life, what would it be?

The deadlift, the squat, the dip, the chin? Nope, I’d choose the burpee.

The burpee is probably the single most effective and complete, whole-body conditioning exercise there is. No other movement on the planet will work as many muscle groups, whilst at the same time massively improving your endurance, stamina and cardiovascular conditioning.

The burpee has been a staple for fighters, cross-fitters and soldiers for years. Your average gym-goer may have heard of them, but he has likely never done them, or if he has, he probably hasn’t done them in the way they were intended, and has never reaped their full benefits..

Here Is An Awesome Video Explaining The Beginner, Intermediate, And Advanced Burpee Workouts…

So how do I benefit from the burpee exercise?

There are 2 steps to benefiting fully from this exercise. The first step is getting the technique correct.

The basic burpee is executed as follows:

From the standing position, drop down into the squat position, with your hands touching the ground.

From this position, extend your feet back in one quick motion to finish in the start of the push-up position.

Then return to the squat position

Return to the upright standing position.

And there you have it, that’s the movement for the most basic form of the burpee. Once you have that mastered, there are many other variations you can add to make it a lot more difficult.

For example, you could do the Push-up burpee, where instead of just returning to the squat position from the start of the push-up position (position 2), you proceed to do a push-up and then return to the squat position and up to the standing position. Also, you can add a jump at the end, where instead of just returning to the standing position, you jump upwards.

To make them even more challenging, do your push-up burpees under a pull-up bar, and at the top of the squat, jump up, grasp the bar and proceed to do a pull-up, that entire movement would equal 1 rep.

There are many other ways to make them even more challenging, so make sure to check out part 2, coming soon.

So, once you have the technique down, its then a case of selecting the correct burpee workout for your level and your aims.

If you’re just starting out, then a good starting point is 5 sets of 10 burpees, with 1 minute of rest between sets. You could add this to your existing workouts, or even incorporate it into your interval training. Depending on your fitness level, you could do either the basic burpee or one of the more advanced variations.

Another slightly more difficult burpee workout would be to do burpees using the Tabata format:

Here you do as many burpees as you can for 20 seconds, then rest for 10 seconds. Repeat for 8 rounds. It doesn’t sound like much, it takes only 4 minutes, but trust me, it will be a hellish 4 minutes, and you’ll be sucking in more air than a jet-engine at the end.

The last workout I’ll make mention of, is the prison burpee workout, as it’s definitely something to aspire to. It’s possibly one of the most devastating workouts I’ve ever come across. It’s well known amongst inmates around the world and the ability to complete it is considered the mark of a man.

The aim is to start with a set of 20 burpees (preferably with a push-up), then a set of 19 burpees, then a set of 18, 17, 16, 15….all the way down to 1. This works out to 210 burpees.

The idea is to rest as little as necessary between sets and to get through it as quickly as possible. If you are able to complete all this in under 20 minutes, then you are most certainly not a guy to be messed with!

That’s it for now, start incorporating some burpee routines into your current workouts and work on doing more burpees in less time every week, it’s the only way to improve your conditioning and shed the fat.

Make sure to check back soon for Part 2, I will be discussing more burpee variants and workout routines.
