It’s a very commonly prescribed course of action, but do you really need cardio workouts to lose tummy fat? According to many it’s essential, according to others completely unnecessary – so how do you determine which opinion is right?
What is cardio?
What people think of when you talk about cardio workouts is an hour on the treadmill, elliptical, or stationary bike. No doubt, if you have ever spent time trying to lose weight or tone up, you’ve probably been there and done that, am I right?
How much did you (or do you) enjoy it? How are your results?

What cardio really is, or should be thought of as:
Instead of thinking of cardio as long mindless bouts of boring repetitive running on a treadmill or riding on a bike let’s define cardio as any exercise that works to strengthen the cardiovascular system. You do this by raising your heart rate, getting your lungs working and keeping the effort going.
Let that sink in for a minute, and then let’s revisit the point of this article – answering the question: Do you really need cardio workouts to lose tummy fat?
Before we do that, let me explain one other fact. The more lean tissue you have in your body, the more calories you burn all day long. Lean tissue includes muscles and internal organs such as you heart and liver and so on.
So back to the point – more lean tissue burns more calories, and burning more calories reduces fat in the body. So, while an hour of cardio on the treadmill is burning calories, what do you think happens when you stop running? Pretty much, you stop burning calories.
A better way?
How long are you on the treadmill before your heart rate goes up and your breathing gets heavy? That’s as long as you need to be on there. Once you start feeling your heart rate rise, and your breathing starts getting heavy it’s time to get off the treadmill and height some weight exercises – as much weight as you need to for the exercise to be challenging.
Why do it this way?
– Weight exercises take far less time than traditional cardio workouts.
– Using weights helps build lean tissue in your body.
– More lean tissue means more calories burned even when you aren’t working out.
Do you really need cardio workouts to lose tummy fat? My answer is no, at least not in the traditional sense.
